Volleyball Falls at Home to Adelphi

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Sept. 29, 2025) - Georgian Court Volleyball hung around for a while against a tough Adelphi group, but the Panthers were able to hold off the Lions in a 3-0 sweep. The Lions were at set point in the opener, but fell 27-25. Adelphi then took the next two sets, 25-19, 25-16.

How it Happened
• The Panthers hit .232 for the match and totaled 44 kills, more than 14 per set. GCU managed just under nine kills per set while hitting .125 for the match.
• Both teams had trouble with service errors. The Panthers hit 11 but balance it out with nine aces. GCU hit eight errors and just five aces.
• Adelphi's defense put back six blocks and picked up 61 digs. The Lions scored just four blocks while digging out 45 attacks.
• GCU was at a sideout percentage less than 50% in all three sets. Adelphi's lowest was 52% in set one, while up to 68% in set three.

Set 1
• The closest set of the night and one the Lions nearly stole. Set one featured 16 ties and nine lead changes.
• Adelphi continued to help out GCU hitting eight service errors in set one alone.
• The Panthers led early, 4-1, but a 5-0 Lion run put them up 7-5. Brooke Bowbliss had a kill and a service ace during the run.
• The two teams then traded points for a while, tying the score from points seven through 10. 
• Adelphi then looked like they were pulling ahead, scoring four straight, but Lions answered with four straight of their own. 
• The teams again battled back and forth with neither team gaining more than a one-point lead after things were tied at 18.
• Stilled tied at 23, a block from Emma Gildea brought the Lions to set point. GCU was again at set point, 25-24, but a service error gave the ball right back to the Panthers.
• AU landed consecutive kills to finish off the frame, 27-25.

Set 2
• Adelphi scored the first two points in the second set and never trailed.
• Georgian Court fought hard though after getting down early, 8-3.
• Trailing by six, 15-9, GCU scored four straight to make it a two-point game.
• They then cut the lead down to one three separate times, the latest at 20-19.
• The Panthers though put an end to the comeback bid scoring the final five points with two kills and two aces.

Set 3
• It was a real back-and-forth affair early with the teams tied at points two through six.
• After a Lion service error made it a 6-6 game, Adelphi rattled off four more points with three coming on GCU miscues.
• Jenna Heiser hit a service ace to make it a one-point game again, 10-9, but after that it was all Panthers.
• They went on a 12-3 run to take a commanding 22-12 lead.
• Georgian Court scored a bit late but another kill from AU leading scorer Macarty McQueen ended the match, 25-16.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Ava Churnesky led the team with eight kills.
• Genesis Simanca landed six with 13 digs.
• Carmen Rivera helped out with 13 digs as well for a share of the team lead.
• Iciar Zayas gave out 13 assists with eight digs.
• Emma Gildea chipped in three kills and two blocks, hitting .500 for the match.

For the Panthers
• Macarty McQueen hit .387 with 13 kills and just one error. She grabbed six digs as well.
• Elena Covic was a kill shy of double-figures and had three blocks.
• Ana Carolina Westerich passed out 38 assists in just three sets with 18 digs and three aces.

News and Notes
• GCU falls to just 3-11 all-time against Adelphi.
• Emma Gildea scored her 100th career block.
• Amber Gallo recorded her 50th career dig.
