WALTHAM, Mass. (August 29, 2026) - For the first 70 minutes, it looked like Saint Michael's had the Lions number after two consecutive shutouts and working on another clean sheet. GCU finally broke through though with two goals over the final 20 minutes to earn a 2-2 draw with the Purple Knights. The Lions finish their weekend in Massachusetts earning two draws to start the season.

How it Happened
• Georgian Court was in control, holding possession for nearly 60% of the match.
• The Lions were attacking the net from the start and finished with 23 shots to the Purple Knights' eight. 
• GCU put 12 shots on goal with SMC getting just three on target.
• Most of Georgian Court's shots came in high-dangerous areas and inside the box. Saint Michael's took more chances from distance with half their shots inside the box and half out.
• Not many whistles blown. Saint Michael's committed 10 fouls and the Lions just five. GCU was issued the only yellow card of the match. 
1st Half
• The Lions had an early scoring opportunity as Gijs van Eif put a shot on goal in the third minute that was saved.
• Georgian Court's defense wasn't allowing much. Saint Michael's didn't get their first shot until the 19th minute. Simon Mortensen was there to make the save.
• The Purple Knights had a bit of a flurry in the 22nd minute, getting off a pair of shots, but the GCU defense was there to block both. 
• Leo Elder got off a pair of shots in the middle of the half, but those were stopped and missed wide. 
• As time was winding down in the half, Saint Michael's got on the board as Preston Blay snuck one past Mortensen for a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute. 
• The Lions nearly tied it at the end of the first. Van Eif ripped two more shots, the first was blocked and on the rebound, the second got through, but SMC goalkeeper Cristian Torres was there to make the save and keep it a 1-0 game after 45 minutes.
2nd Half
• Georgian Court's offense kept generating pressure. They got shots from Tim Wilk and Luke Henstock-Smith early in the half, but neither were on target. 
• The Lions put a shot on target in the 60th minute. This one off the foot of Lennox Dorn, but Torres was there to make another save. 
• For nearly the first 20 minutes of the half, Saint Michael's was pushed back in their defensive end. They only took one shot in the first 15 minutes, but made their second count.
• The Purple Knights earned a corner kick and converted as Liam Weldon put one high into the corner for a 2-0 lead.
• Shortly after the goal, GCU was right back on the attack. Sander Rynning and Felix Kramper each took shot attempts, but were blocked before they reached the net.
• The Lions kept peppering the net and finally broke through in the 71st minute.
• Elder and van Eif each had shots saved and pushed out forcing corner kicks. On the second one, Wilk cashed in with an assist from Rynning to get GCU right back into the match.
• Georgian Court worked for another corner, and while it didn't lead directly to a goal, the pressure generated was enough to break through and tie the game. 
• Rynning, after assisting on the first goal, this time scored one himself, going high over the keeper's head and knotting the game at two in the 76th minute. 
• After the tying goal, the Lions outshot SMC 4-0 over the closing minutes, but couldn't net the game winner and the game ended in a draw.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Tim Wilk played all 90 minutes and scored for the Lions.
• Sander Rynning finished with three points, a goal and an assist.
• Gijs van Eif took six shots, three on goal.
• Leo Elder led GCU with seven total shots, putting five on net.
• Simon Mortensen was the beneficiary of the Lions defense. He faced just three shots on goal and made one save. 

For the Purple Knights
• Cristian Torres did all he could to earn a win making nine saves.
• Liam Weldon scored the game's first goal.
• Sean Hendrie added an assist.
• Preston Blay put two shots on goal and scored twice.

News and Notes
• Wilk's goal was the Lions first against Saint Michael's in three years. SMC had kept GCU scoreless for 250 consecutive minutes.
• This is the fourth time in program history GCU has started the year unbeaten. It's also the first time they took a draw in each of their first two games.
• For both Wilk and Rynning, this is their first career collegiate goals scored.
• Georgian Court's 23 shots match the most they took in a game all of last year. The only time in the last two season's GCU had more was when they had 31 back in October, 2024 against Bloomfield.
