GCU Volleyball Drops a Pair on First Day of Season-Opening Tampa Classic

The Georgian Court University volleyball squad opened its 2009 season with a pair of defeats Friday afternoon at the Tampa Classic in Tampa, FL.

The Lions (0-2) fell to Wheeling Jesuit University, 3-0 (17-25, 16-25, 17-25), in the first match of the afternoon. Senior Joann Zayas led all players with nine kills, while senior Lisamary Figueroa distributed a game-high 17 assists and senior libero Ana Cruz tallied 13 digs. The Lady Cardinals start the year, 1-0.

Georgian Court dropped another 3-0 (21-25, 21-25, 21-25) decision in the second contest, this time to Lock Haven University (1-1). Senior Janelle Murdock topped the Lions with eight kills and 10 digs. Figueroa again led GCU in the assist column, this time with 28 distributions. The Lady Eagles fell to host-University of Tampa, 3-0, in the opening match of the tournament.

The Lions next take on the Spartans of Tampa Saturday afternoon at 3:30 PM.
