WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Georgian Court University basketball squad traveled to our nation's capitiol over the weekend, losing two contests in the University of the District of Columbia's Thanksgiving Classic.
The Lions (0-3) opened the event Saturday afternoon with a 56-44 defeat to St. Paul's College (1-2) of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). Senior
Lauren Staats went 4-for-15 from the field for 11 points while freshman
Chinyere Ozuzu tallied 11 points of her own in 15 minutes of play.
Four Tigers shot in double figures, including
Jasmine Stewart (So.-Washington D.C.) (19 points),
DeAudra Brown (Jr.-Rocky Mount, NC) (15 points),
Alisha Hardley (Fr.-Stafford,VA) (11 points) and
Tiffany Merritt (So.-Brunswick, GA).
On Sunday, GCU lost to Cheyney University of the PSAC, 56-54, as
Nadirah Brown (Jr.-Willingboro, NJ) sank a pair of free throws with ten seconds remaining in the game. Brown led all players with 26 points and 17 rebounds in 35 minutes of action. Teammate
Christalee Lynch (Jr.-Brooklyn, NY) provided 12 points and eight boards in 32 minutes for the Wolves (2-2).
Jasmine Lewis led the Lions with 13 points in 33 minutes, while grabbing eight rebounds and distributing five assists. Staats, a member of the all-tournament team, dropped in 12 points while
Samantha Heck collected 11 points and seven rebounds.
Kiki Mayweather led GCU with 12 boards, including eight of the defensive variety.
Georgian Court takes to the road again on Saturday evening when they travel to Kutztown University of the PSAC for a 6:00 PM game.
