Georgian Court Men Get First Win Under Belt with 4-2 Defeat of Nyack College

Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University men's soccer squad enjoyed the sweet taste of victory for the first time this season as the Lions doubled up visiting Nyack College, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition.

The triumph improves GCU's mark to 1-3-2 (1-0-1 CACC) while the Warriors remained winless at 0-5-1 (0-3 CACC).

Nyack jumped out to an initial 1-0 advantage at 16:40 after Piotr Piasecki (Sr.-Lodz, Poland) headed in a rebounded shot, which came off a Warriors' corner kick.

Ben Vergara (Sr.-Toms River, N.J.) put in the equalizer for the Lions at 32:21 after a goal which credited Brad Golec (So.-Evansville, Ind.) and Michael Clarke (So.-Essex, UK) with assists. Jorge Rivera (So.-Brick, N.J) gave Georgian Court a 2-1 lead (35:08) before the half with his first goal of the season, a header off  a Sebastian Gostynski (So.-Garfield, N.J.) corner kick.

The advantage increased to 3-1 at 57:17 after Vergara netted number two on the day, courtesy of a duo assist from Rivera and Matthew Kuras (So.-Brick, N.J.).

Nyack attempted a comeback at 71:53 when Ralph Nicholson (R-Fr.-Allendale, N.J.) scored an unassisted goal to cut the Nyack deficit to 3-2. GCU's Garrett McVeigh (So.-Cherry Hill, N.J.) added a key insurance score at 78:45 when he sent home a rebounded shot to secure the win for the home team.

Georgian Court outshot Nyack, 15-8, while both teams each attempted four corner kicks.

Sebastian Mikuska (So.-Augsburg, Germany), coming off the Lions' bench, earned the victory after collecting a save in 66:22 of action. Nyack's Michael Reger (Fr.-Grafton, N.Y.), also entering from the sidelines, suffered the defeat, tallying five saves in the effort (81:38).

The Lions return to the pitch Wednesday afternoon with a CACC home showdown vs. Holy Family University at 3:30 p.m.
