Caldwell, N.J.- Needing a victory to clinch the first postseason berth in the young three-year history of the program, the Georgian Court University men's soccer squad fell just short of that ultimate goal Saturday as the Lions dropped a 4-3 decision at Caldwell University, bring the 2015 campaign to a sudden conclusion for GCU.
Even after dropping four of their final five contests of the year, the Lions still established a program-best with seven overall victories (7-8-2) and four triumphs over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foes (4-6-2).
Trailing 2-0 in the 29th minute (28:43), GCU's
Michael Clarke clubbed a loose ball off a corner kick at 34:41 to put the Lions on the board. The tally secured the junior the CACC scoring title, giving Clarke a career-best 17 goals on the year.
Italo Cardoso countered at 43:14 to provide the Cougars (5-12-1, 4-7-1 CACC) what appeared to be a comfortable 3-1 advantage heading into intermission.
Georgian Court came out with a vengeance in the second stanza, commenced byÂ
Andres Adum's second score of the season at 51:04 to cut the Caldwell lead to 3-2.
Ricardo Vascones brought the visitors all the way back at 74:33, netting his third of the season off a free ball in front of the goal.
Unfortunately, it would not end favorably for the Lions as the Cougars regained the lead just 3:29 later (78:02) as
Joaquin Escudero thwarted the Lions' hopes with his third of the year.
GCU outshot Caldwell, 16-12 while each team attempted six corner kicks apiece.
