Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University men's soccer squad, picked to finish 9th in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Preseason Poll, continues to thumb its collective nose at the so-called experts as the Lions shocked first-place Concordia College Friday afternoon with a 2-1 sinking of the Clippers as just 85 seconds remained on the clock in regulation play.
The victory increases the team's stellar record to 11-5-1 (8-3-1 CACC) and secures the #2 seed in next week's CACC Championship Tournament. The Lions will host #7 Philadelphia University Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the quarterfinal round.
Concordia (11-5, 9-3 CACC) jumped out to a 1-0 advantage at 31:33 when
Ovan Oakley (Gr.-Kingston, Jamaica) connected on a
Javier Alvarez Vispo (Sr.-La Coruna, Spain)Â cross for his team-leading 14th goal of the season.
The Lions waited until the 54th minute (53:05) to respond as
William Docherty rattled home a
Daniel Chochlinski dish from the left side to knot the score at 1-1. For Docherty, it marked the third tally of the year for the senior.
The match looked destined for extra minutes, but fate would be on the side of the home team as
Jonathan Firmino launched a desperation ball from midfield that carried over the Concordia keeper and into the nylon, securing the triumph with 1:25 on the board. The goal serves as the first of the freshman's collegiate career.
GCU outshot its foe, 16-12, but experienced a 6-2 deficit regarding corner kicks.
Sebastian Mikuska stayed perfect (4-0) in the Lions' net, snaring seven saves in the complete-game "W".
Georgian Court last played Philadelphia (6-9-2) back on September 13, defeating the Rams by a score of 2-1.
