Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University men's soccer squad finds itself on the doorstep of history as the fourth-year program, playing in its first postseason ever, advanced to the 2016 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Game with a 3-2 comeback victory vs. #3 Wilmington University, Friday afternoon in a game hosted by the Lions.
GCU, the tournament's #2 seed, has now won seven straight contests and will next play #8 Â Post University on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m., which will be played in the Georgian Court University Track & Field Complex. The Eagles upset #4 Caldwell University in overtime, 4-3, earlier in the day.
Wilmington (12-6-1) snared an initial 1-0 advantage 17:36 into the affair after a costly GCU handball infraction set up a successful penalty kick for
Geoff Velasquez (Sr.-New Castle, Del.).Â
The Wildcats' slim lead would carry into the second stanza (barely) as the Lions (13-5-1) knotted the score at 1-1 just 1:04 into the session (46:04) when
Daniel Chochlinski gathered a
Michael Clarke helper and scalded a shot for his first goal as a Lion.
The ensuing euphoria would be very brief for GCU however, as Wilmington's
Sam Jester (So.-Middletown, Del.) didn't leave the "Court" entertained with his go-ahead goal just 2:39 later at 48:43.
With the tension mounting with each passing minute, the Lions pulled a role-reversal at 59:20 when Chochlinski returned the favor to Clarke, providing the All-CACC first-teamer a pass the senior swiftly deposited to establish a 2-2 stalemate. The senior scoring sensation was not finished there as Clarke buried an unassisted deflection at 76:25 for his tenth tally of the year, a goal that ultimately punched the Lions' ticket to Sunday's title game.
Sebastian Mikuska improved to 7-0 in the Georgian Court net, gathering seven saves in the complete-game victory.
Post University slipped past GCU, 2-1, in the teams' lone match this season back on October 8 in Waterbury, Conn.
