Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University men's soccer squad, ranked #9 in the CACC preseason poll entering the 2016 campaign, proved that it's how you finish that matters as the Lions made history Sunday afternoon by defeating #8-seed Post University in the most dramatic of fashions, a 4-3 shootout triumph, to secure the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title in just its fourth season as a program.
Head Coach
Dino Raso and his roster improves to 13-5-2 and now await to see if a NCAA Regional berth is in the tea leaves as the Lions will need to tune into the
NCAA Tournament selection show Monday at 6:30 p.m. to find out. The Eagles end the season at 7-8-5 after its magical run to the tournament final.
A scoreless stalemate between the two competitors was snapped at 82:28 when
Gabriel Aguilar (Fr.-Stamford, Conn.) danced through the GCU defense and drilled his first tally of the year to put the Eagles ahead, 1-0.
With only 7:32 remaining in regulation play, the future was looking perilous for the Lions, well at least until
Michael Clarke took matters into his own hands as the 2015 All-American headed home a
Sean Graham free kick to miraculously tie the score at 1-1. For Clarke, it marked the scoring sensation's 11th goal of the season ... and fourth of the 2016 postseason.
After two ten-minute overtime periods failed to produce a winner, GCU and Post were forced to a shootout to settle the contest. With tension filling the Georgian Court Track & Field Complex with every passing second, it would be the Lions that would escape with 4-3 shootout victory as Clarke connected on the PK that provided his team the championship banner.
In a game that goes in the books as a tie,
Sebastian Mikuska grabbed five saves in 110:00, improving to 7-0-1 in the GCU net.Â
Post outshot the Lions, 18-9, and owned a 6-2 advantage regarding corner kicks.
Clarke (MVP), Mikuska,
Andres Adum,
Jonathan Firmino, and
Daniel Chochlinski earned All-Tournament Team accolades.
