Lakewood, N.J. - An
Alistair Hughes (Jr.-Blantyre, Scotland) goal with just 0:57 remaining in regulation left Georgian Court University stunned as Bloomfield College spoiled the GCU Homecoming festivities with a 2-1 road victory Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's soccer action.
The win boosts the Bears' record to 7-2 on the season (5-1 CACC) while the Lions slip to 6-3-2 (3-2-1 CACC) after the crucial conference setback.
After a scoreless first half, GCU snapped the 0-0 stalemate, courtesy of a Bloomfield own goal, after a
Vinicius Montiero corner kick rattled off two BC defenders and into the visitor's net. The slim 1-0 advantage would hold until the 77th minute (76:24) when A
rman Bashiri (Jr.-Lovenstad, Norway) belted in a GCU ricochet to knot the score at 1-1.
The Lions proceeded to count the seconds until a potential overtime opportunity, but Hughes dashed those hopes with his last-second heroics.
Jovan Stanojkovic (Pancevo, Serbia) escaped with the victory as the Bloomfield keeper gathered four saves on 12 total Georgian Court shots.
Yianni Kavarakas collected six denials off 15 shot attempts by Bloomfield.
GCU returns to the pitch this Tuesday afternoon when they play the always-tough Wilmington University Wildcats at 3:30 p.m. on Investors Savings Bank Field.
