Philadelphia, Pa. - For the third consecutive season, the Georgian Court University women's soccer squad has secured the top seed in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament as the Lions edged host-Holy Family University, 2-1, Friday afternoon to bring home a third-straight regular-season title.
The Lions (13-3-2, 12-0 CACC), unblemished in conference play for the second time in three years (11-0-1, 2015), will now welcome #8 Felician University to campus Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. as GCU takes on the Golden Falcons (5-10-1, 4-8 CACC) in the CACCÂ quarterfinals.
Felician dropped a 2-0 decision during its last trip to Lakewood back on September 23. The Lions also blanked the Golden Falcons, 3-0, in the first round of the 2016 tournament, also hosted by Georgian Court.
GCU netted the first tally of the contest Friday as
Heather Arbachesky slipped home a
Lizzy Kroon pass at the 15:56 mark for the junior's seventh score of the year. The Lions' surplus doubled at 33:23 when
Kaitlin Lister connected on an
Anissia Fucci feed, a tough-angle shot from the far left side into the upper right.
The scoreboard would remain stagnant until the 53rd minute (52:23) when
Alex Teschko (Fr.-Clayton, N.J.) ruined the Lions' shutout bid with her third of the year.Â
Natalie Axelsson was credited with the victory for GCU after compiling four saves in the complete-game effort.
Emily Camp (Pittsgrove, N.J.) dazzled with eight saves of her own in the Holy Family frame even though the freshman keeper was labeled with the loss.
With today's setback, Holy Family will fill the #3 seed and host #6Â Caldwell University Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.Â
