Lakewood, N.J. - The Georgian Court University women's soccer squad punched its ticket for an amazing 12th straight postseason appearance, while also staying undefeated in conference play as the 7-0 Lions turned away visiting Wilmington University, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action.
Head Coach
James Moore and his Lions (8-3-2 overall) have now advanced to the CACCÂ tournament every season since the 2006 campaign. The always-tough Wildcats dip to 5-2 in conference action (6-5-1 overall).
The opening whistle had just completed its initial shrill when the Lions lit the scoreboard 59 seconds into the contest as
Kaitlin Lister belted a deflected
Lauren Mendez pass to secure her second tally of the season. GCU doubled its advantage in the ninth minute (8:23) when
Lizzy Kroon headed home a Lister cross for the senior's sixth goal on the year.
The Wildcats sliced the deficit in half at 28:47 when
Krysta Memis (Fr.-Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) placed a boot on a residual loose ball courtesy of a Wilmington free kick. That would conclude the scoring for the contest as neither club could find the back of the net in the second stanza.
Natalie Axelsson earned the win in goal for the Lions with five saves over 90:00 of action.
Kierstyn Williams (Sr.-Middletown, Del.) was tagged with the loss collecting two saves in the complete-game effort. The Wildcats outshot the host-Lions, 15-11, with a 6-4 surplus on frame.
GCU goes for its eighth straight victory in conference play this Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. contest at Caldwell University. This will mark the first meeting between the two teams since November 6, 2016 when the #2 Cougars upset the top-seeded Lions, 1-0, in the 2016 CACCÂ Tournament Championship Game.
