Waterbury, Conn. - The Georgian Court University women's volleyball squad came out of nowhere Tuesday evening to pull off a stunner as the Lions left host-Post University aghast with a 3-2 upset in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Tournament quarterfinals.
In five epic sets, the Eagles took two of the first three stanzas (25-20, 24-26, 25-22) before the Lions roared back to claw their way to victories in #4 and #5 (27-23, 15-13).
GCU (14-19) now advances to the CACC semifinals for the first time since 2014 with a showdown vs. divisional rival, Jefferson, on the horizon. The two teams will square off on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (hosted by Wilmington University) after the #1 overall seed Lady Rams made quick work of Bloomfield College, 3-0.
Aubrey Binkley enjoyed an MVP-type performance for Georgian Court as the freshman dominated with a performance consisting of 22 kills, 10 digs and six service aces. Newly-minted All-CACC first-teamer,
Amy Bruno, proved she was worth every ounce of the accolade as the sophomore clubbed 12 kills to go along with seven blocks.
Shana Rayside was a beast above the net for the Lions with a 10-block assault.
Ashley Pierson was an assist machine as the freshman distributed 49 helpers, complemented by four aces.
Gaby Merced dished a match-best 20 digs in the win.
In other CACC postseason action, the North Division's #1 seed, Caldwell University, blanked S#4 Goldey-Beacom College, 3-0, while S#2 Holy Family University sent N#3 Nyack College packing, 3-1.
