Lakewood, N.J. - Playing on back-to-back days, the Georgian Court University men's basketball squad came to within one point of its opponent on two separate occasions in the second half, but could not complete the takeover as visiting American International College put away the host-Lions 64-55, Sunday afternoon in the GCU Wellness Center Arena.
Coming out of intermission trailing by 12 (37-25), the Lions attacked with a mighty 19-8 run to start the second stanza, and cut the deficit to one point (45-44) with 9:33 remaining. A
Tremaine Carter free throw at 8:35 made the score 46-45, but that would be as close as GCU could get as the 3-2 Yellow Jackets kept the home team at a safe distance the remainder of the contest, courtesy of a 18-10 spurt to seal the deal.
AIC took advantage of Georgian Court's miscues, netting 28 points off 22 turnovers by the Lions.
Talib Swan (Sr.-Montclair, N.J.) topped the Yellow Jackets with 15 points while
Robert Durant (Fr.-New Haven, Conn.),
Jordan Vidal (Fr.-Bronx, N.Y.) and
Adonis Williams (Fr.-Spring Valley, N.Y.) each dropped in 13 apiece.
Juwuan Carter enjoyed a breakout performance for the Lions as the senior poured in a game-high 17 points.
Nikola Vujovic added 12 of his own while
Tony Ellington, Jr. contributed nine points and five assists.
GCU (0-8) kicks off its conference slate Saturday afternoon when they host divisional-rival, Jefferson, at 3:00 p.m. in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition.
