Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University men's basketball squad pushed visiting Jefferson to the limit Saturday afternoon as the Rams pulled away late for the 69-60 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) divisional victory in the GCU Wellness Center.
Jefferson evens its overall record at 5-5 (1-0 CACC) while the Lions remain winless at 0-9 (0-1 CACC).
The Rams opened a 16-7 advantage at the 13:17 mark, courtesy of a
Kaison Randolph (Sr.-Trenton, N.J.) three-pointer. Georgian Court proceeded to mount a 13-3 run to slip ahead, 20-19, with 5:44 to go before intermission. With the score knotted at 22 (4:14), the Lions provided a 10-7 push to escape into the locker room ahead by four (30-26).
GCU opened a game-high eight-point advantage after an emphatic dunk (12:43) by
Tony Ellington, Jr. put the home team up, 40-32. The Rams immediately rallied back with a neat 8-0 run to tie the game at 40-40 with 10:09 to go. After the foes each exchanged another field goal, Jefferson took off on a 17-9 sprint, capped by a
Kylan Guerra (So.-White Plains, N.Y.) three-pointer with 4:27 left in regulation.
A pair of free throws by Randolph provided the victors their largest surplus of the contest at 69-58.
Despite the result, the Lions out-shot the Rams, 45.1% to 42.6% from the field.Â
Randolph paced Jefferson with his game-high 21 points, followed by
Alexander Gorton (Fr.-Jonesboro, Ark.) with 18.
Yevgen Sakhniuk (Sr.-Kiev, Ukraine) and
Kylan Guerra (five assists) added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Juwuan Carter, who was honored before the game with a ball commemorating his 1,000th career point (11/21 vs. LIU Post), poured in a team-high 18 points.
Nikola Vujovic shot six-for-eight from the floor for 14 points while
Caleb Bowser reached double-digits with 10 points.
The Lions hit the road Tuesday with an 8:00 p.m. divisional contest at University of the Sciences.
