Lakewood, N.J. - The #1-seed Georgian Court University women's soccer squad has secured its second consecutive trip to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Game as the Lions dismissed #4 Goldey-Beacom College, 3-1, in Friday's semifinal round.
The Lions will take on #2 Wilmington University as the Wildcats advance to the title match with a 3-1 defeat of #3 Holy Family University. GCU defeated WU, 2-1, in their only meeting of the year back on Oct. 4 at Georgian Court.
GCU took the initial lead when All-CACC first-teamer,
Anissia Fucci, headed home a
Meagan Murdocco corner kick at 36:10 to put the Lions up, 1-0.
Kristen Lister doubled the lead at 53:37 when she too neatly knocked home a Murdocco corner with her noggin. For Lister, the tally marked her first of the year after a pair during her freshman campaign.
Cliona Hammond (Jr.-Wicklow, Ireland) cut the Lightning deficit in half at 55:29 when the junior booted a blast out of the reach of Georgian Court keeper,
Natalie Axelsson, from 20-25 yards out. The Lions regained their two-goal cushion ten minutes later (65:31) when Murdocco legged another laser beam corner kick off Fucci's forehead to give GCU a 3-1 lead,
and the star-sophomore her team-best 13th goal on the season.
Axelsson registered the victory in the Lions' net, needing one save to do so.
Marta Lopez (Jr.-Valencia, Spain) was the keeper of record for Goldey-Beacom (four saves). Georgian Court outshot the Lightning by a 15-7 margin (7-2 on frame).
The Lightning end the year with a record of 12-5-2.
GCU (15-3-2) will play the 14-5-1 Wildcats at 12:30 p.m. on the turf field in the Georgian Court University Track & Field Complex. That contest will be preceded by the men's championship game at 10:00 a.m. as #1 Jefferson takes on #2 Goldey-Beacom College.
