Box Score Lakewood, N.J. - On a day that the Georgian Court University men's lacrosse squad honored its first-ever senior class, the Lions were determined to send off their graduating quintet with a memory they'll never forget as GCU closed out the 2017 campaign Sunday with a thrilling 13-12 overtime victory vs. Roberts Wesleyan College.
The visiting Redhawks (4-12) escaped the initial 15:00 of action with a slim 3-2 lead. GCU responded by netting the first three tallies of the second period before RWC responded with a trio of their own to build a 5-3 surplus with 5:42 left before intermission. The Lions countered with five unanswered goals to develop a 10-6 advantage at the 1:55 mark of the third.
Roberts Wesleyan, not to be outworked, slipped in four of the game's next five scoring efforts to cut the deficit to 11-10 with 8:30 remaining.
Michael Saladino's fourth goal of the game made the score 12-10 Lions at the 6:00-mark before tallies from
AJ Hemms (Fr.-Palmyra, N.Y.) and
Zac Sapor (Sr.-Greece, N.Y.) with 3:43 and 1:28 remaining, respectively, knotted the game at 12-all to force the overtime period.
GCU, taking to extra time for the second straight outing, was determined for a different result after falling in OT to American International, 10-9, last Tuesday. The Lions would need 2:46 of the extra session before
Christopher Van Ooteghem whipped in the game-winner, his fourth of the contest, giving the home team a program-best fifth victory (5-11) of the season.
Joe Ramirez collected two goals for the victors with
Tanner Lee,
Jake Sherman and
Ryder Verdoni scoring one apiece.
Austin Giessel closed out his freshman campaign with 16 saves and a win in the GCU net.
Georgian Court honored
