Box Score 2 Lakewood, N.J. - The Georgian Court University volleyball squad, hosting its 4th annual GCU Invite, closed out the two-day event Saturday with loses to the University of New Haven and Pace University as the Lions still seek their first victory of 2017 (0-7).
GAME ONE
In the first match of the afternoon, Georgian Court fell to New Haven in straight sets by the scores of 25-15, 25-23, 25-13.
Alex Bussey (Sr.-Atlanta, Ga.) shined for the 2-6 Chargers by leading the victors with nine kills, five blocks, and three aces.
Kristine Rios (Jr.-Miami, Fla) contributed a match-best 21 assists while
Lindsey Kim (Jr.-Rye Brook, N.Y.) gathered 20 digs for UNH.
Peggy Rosario blasted a team-high nine kills for the Lions to go along with 13 digs.
Ashley Pierson and
Jaime Sweeney dished 14 and 12 assists, respectively. Sweeney added 12 digs to complete the double-double effort for GCU while
Gaby Merced topped the home team with 19 digs of her own.
GAME TWO
Georgian Court faced Pace University in the finale as the Setters (2-6) escaped with a 3-1 road triumph (25-12, 17-25, 25-22, 25-23).
Tatjana Calimpong--Burke (So.-Waianae, Hawaii) led the way for the Setters with a double-double performance of 11 kills and 17 digs.
Nicole Pivetti (Fr.-Modena, Italy) shared 27 assists while
Danielle Vaiano (So.-Seaford, N.Y.) collected a team-best 22 digs.
As for the Lions, Rosario closed out her all-tournament showing with a match-high 15 kills, followed by
Amy Bruno's 11. Pierson (20 assists, 10 digs) and Sweeney (13 assists, 10 digs) each provided double-doubles for GCU while Merced contributed 12 digs.
GCU now looks forward to Wednesday as the Lions open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition at Holy Family University. Start time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
