GCU Women Work Overtime Yet Again As Lions Edged at NYIT, 3-2, in Second Extra Session

Old Westbury, N.Y.- The Georgian Court University women's soccer squad, playing its third overtime contest in the last four outings for the Lions, battled to the 103rd minute Thursday afternoon as GCU suffered a frustrating 3-2 non-conference setback against the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT).

Georgian Court (2-3-1) drew first blood at 12:54 when Anissia Fucci continued her hot start to the season as she headed home a Kaitlin Lister corner kick for the sophomore's third goal of the year. The Lions' advantage would last just under five minutes (4:58) when NYIT's Casey Luongo (Fr.-Center Moriches, N.Y.) tied the game at one with her first collegiate goal (17:52).

Morgan LaDuca, for the second straight game, buried a free kick, this time from 27 yards out, to put the Lions back ahead, 2-1, at 26:09. Like the first surplus of the half, this one was also short-lived as Luongo returned to the spotlight for the host-Bears at 33:16 to net her second tally of the game and knot the score at 2-2.

The second half proved to be a complete contrast to the high-flying first 45:00 as the two foes could not find the back of the net. In fact, it would not be until 102:18 when Taylor Casey (Jr.-East Hartford, Conn.) put an end to the marathon match by depositing her first goal of the season in the timeliest of fashions to give the Bears their first victory of the year (1-3).

Jessie Sabal (Jr.-Valley Stream, N.Y.) secured the win in the NYIT net with three saves on eight Georgian Court shots. After missing the last three contests, Natalie Axelsson returned to the GCU goal and suffered the tough-luck defeat as the sophomore secured seven saves on 17 shots by the Bears.

The Lions return home Saturday as Concordia College visits for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference showdown at noon.
