Lakewood, N.J. - The Georgian Court University women's soccer squad hosted Molloy College Thursday afternoon as both Lions escaped with a point after a high-flying 5-5 draw in NCAA Division II non-conference action.
The contest got off to an ominous start for GCU as Molloy's
Dana Poetzsch (Fr.-Hicksville, N.Y.) took advantage of a home team infraction and buried a PK just 5:37 in. Georgian Court rebounded with two straight tallies, courtesy of
Heather Arbachesky (25:29) and
Lauren Mendez (27:43), to take a slim 2-1 lead.
The Georgian Court advantage would be short-lived (1:04 to be exact) as
Felicia Lapera (Sr.-West Babylon, N.Y.) came out of a free-ball scrum with her first goal of the season at 28:47. The royal and gold answered at 39:07 when
Anissia Fucci drained her team-best seventh score of the year after batting a
Kaylie Wessberg cross out of the air for a 3-2 lead heading into intermission.
The mood would turn quite tense for Georgian Court as Molloy's Poetzsch rattled off her second and third tallies of the day at 48:56 and 59:57 to provide the visiting Lions a slim 4-3 advantage. Fucci proceeded to play head games with Molloy as the sizzling sophomore headed in a bouncing
Dana Fontana chip to knot the score at 4-all. (63:03).
Kaitlin Lister followed 1:27 later with her first of the year off a
Lizzy Kroon through-ball to put GCU up, 5-4.
Holding on to the slimmest of leads, Georgian Court collectively counted down the seconds to what would be a seventh victory of the year, but it proved to be wasted energy as Lapera cancelled the celebration with her second score of the session with just 1:36 remaining in regulation, salvaging the point for Molloy (3-3-1).
Natalie Axelsson registered five saves on 17 Molloy shots in 110:00 of action while counterpart,
Jackie Carty (Fr.-East Islip, N.Y.) corralled eight saves 15 shots by GCU.
Georgian Court (6-3-2) now looks forward to Saturday afternoon as the Lions host Bloomfield College at 1:00 p.m. for a special Homecoming Weekend conference contest.
