Orangeburg, N.Y.- The Georgian Court University men's basketball squad, after jumping out to a 16-point lead in the first half, was unable to maintain its high energy as Dominican College charged back in the second half to defeat the visiting Lions, 76-72, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action.
GCU (3-15, 3-7 CACC), after a
Sean Barksdale three-pointer at the 8:25 mark of the first half, enjoyed a 26-10 advantage before the Chargers (13-5, 7-2 CACC) sprinted on a 25-4 run to build a five-point surplus (35-30) with 1:22 remaining before intermission. The home team would never trail again as Dominican mounted its highest lead of the contest when an
Ian Gardener (Jr.-Norwalk, Conn.)Â dunk put the eventual-victors ahead, 68-58, with 4:42 left in regulation.
The Lions shot a superb 52.2% (24-for-46) from the field, but turned the ball over 26 times resulting in 27 points for Dominican.
Gardener paced the Chargers' offense with his 22 points, shooting 8-of-20 from the floor.
Daniel Grant (So.-Middletown, N.Y.) followed with 19 points while
TyJon Gilmore (Fr.-Watervliet, N.Y.) contributed 16.
Five Lions drained ten or more points with
Caleb Bowser leading the way with 18.
Tony Ellington, Jr. recorded 14 while
Juwuan Carter and
Omar Williams each netted 12 apiece.
Nikola Vujovic put down 10 in the GCU setback.
Georgian Court returns home Wednesday evening for an 8:00 p.m. conference contest vs. the University of the Sciences.
