Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University men's basketball squad seems to have crafted a concoction for which the University of the Sciences has no antidote as the Lions downed the Devils for the second straight season in the Wellness Center (third season overall), this time by a score of 65-63.
The cardiac kids of GCU improve to 4-15 (4-7 CACC) while USciences falls to 11-8 on the season (7-4 CACC). The Lions dropped the Devils in "The Well", 64-63, back on Dec. 3, 2016 and stole a road contest from the Philadelphia-based foe, 73-66, on Jan. 27, 2016.
After a first half that ended in a 28-28 stalemate, the visitors jumped out to a six-point advantage in the second stanza after a
Flo Da-Silva (Sr.-Moorestown, N.J.) layup at 16:33 put the Devils ahead, 36-30. USciences would maintain the lead until 13:58 when a thrilling steal and fast-break flush by
Juwuan Carter tied the contest at 39-all.
The visitors would not relent as the Devils proceeded to author four leads of four or more points in the following minutes, all of which were quickly erased by the tenacious Lions. USciences went up by as many as six with 7:06 to go after a DaSilva three-pointer put the road warriors ahead, 58-52.
A
Nikola Vujovic lay-in at the 3:47 mark capped a 9-2 spurt by GCU and gave the Lions an ever-so-slim lead of 61-60. A clutch jumper by
Tony Ellington, Jr. tore the roof off the arena as Georgian Court increased its lead to 63-60 with 2:31 left.Â
Da-Silva again proved to be a thorn in the Lions' paw as the senior snapped home a three-pointer at 1:12 to tie the affair at 63-63. After an unfortunate foul by USciences coming out of a Georgian Court timeout, Carter proceeded to coast to the charity stripe and drain a pair of clutch free throws to seal the upset victory.
GCU, in its signature win of the year, displayed stellar discipline as the team yielded just eight turnovers and 15 personal fouls in the outing.
Vujovic topped all players with his 20 points on the night. Ellington, Jr. and
Omar Williams deposited 12 apiece for the Lions while Carter contributed 10 points of his own.
Will Gregorits (Sr.-Burke, Va.) authored a nifty double-double of 14 points and 12 boards for the Devils. Da-Silva paced USciences with 18 points.
Paddy Casey (Fr.-Scranton, Pa.) registered 12 in the setback.
The Lions now take to the road this Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. conference showdown at Nyack College.
