Newark, Del. - Having come out on top in their last two contests, the Georgian Court University men's basketball squad took the floor Saturday afternoon in search of its first three-game winning streak in almost two years. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be on this day as host-Wilmington University tamed the Lions, 92-68, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) divisional action.
The Wildcats (9-6, 4-2 CACC) pounced for a healthy 42-20 lead heading into intermission. GCU (2-12, 2-4 CACC) played WU close in the second stanza, 50-48, but there was not much the road team could do at that point to erase such a deficit. Wilmington never trailed in the game, achieving a game-high surplus of 29 points (51-22) with 17:21 remaining in regulation.
It may have been frigid outdoors, but the home team heated things up on the hardwood, shooting a scalding 54.7% (35-for-64) from the floor.
Miles Gillette (So.-Washington, D.C.) led the way with a stellar double-double effort consisting of 34 points and 14 boards.
Shawn Church (Sr.-Darby, Pa.) poured in seven three-pointers en route to a 23-point showing.
Jermaine Head (So.-Edgewood, Md.) provided a balance effort of 18 points, eight assists and five steals in the triumph.
Four Lions secured double-digit scoring performances in the setback, led by
Bryce Council with a career-high 18 points.
Caleb Bowser, coming off a 27-point effort in Wednesday's win at Holy Family, dropped in 14 points while
Tremaine Carter and
Nikola Vujovic poured in 12 and 11 points, respectively.
GCU returns home to host Concordia College Wednesday evening at 8:00 p.m. in another CACCÂ contest.
