Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court university welcomed Caldwell University to campus Saturday afternoon as the longtime rivals faced off in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's soccer action.
The two teams alternated goals throughout the contest, with the home team scoring the final effort as the Lions outlasted the Cougars, 3-2. The win marks GCU's 22nd-straight CACC regular season victory, improving to a perfect 9-0 in conference play this season (10-3 overall). Caldwell falls to 8-4-1 (7-2-1 CACC).
Kaitlin Lister put GCU on the board first when the junior followed her shot after an initial save and dribbled in her fourth goal of the year at 17:04. The lead would hold until 43:50 when Caldwell's
Amber Raines poked in her second of the season after a
Samantha Pereira free kick deflected off a Georgian Court defender.
The stalemate would carry into the second half, but only briefly as
Dana Fontana netted her first of the campaign, courtesy of a
Heather Arbachesky helper, just 56 seconds into the stanza (45:56). The Cougars' offense again answered with a tying tally as
Amanda Wroblewski blasted in her fifth of the year (courtesy of
Teaghan Darling) to knot the line at 2-2.
Georgian Court would wait another 20:43 to torch the tie as a Caldwell infraction set the stage for Arbachesky's game-winning penalty kick (69:52), providing the Lions' the win and the senior her 11th goal of the year. In an evenly-matched game, GCU narrowly out-shot the Cougars, 18-16 (9-7 on frame).
Natalie Axelsson improved to 9-3 in the Lions' net with five saves over her 90 minutes of play.
Jamie-Lee Bamford took the loss, despite her six saves in the complete-game effort.
The Lions now look ahead to Tuesday when they visit Wilmington University in an always-tough CACCÂ road trip. Start time is set for 3:30 p.m.
