Philadelphia, Pa. - Georgian Court University put in a full day of work Saturday as the Lions traveled to Holy Family University to take on the host-Tigers, as well as Molloy College, in GCU's fourth tri-match of the year.
In the opener, the Lions faced off vs. Holy Family in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference divisional action in the clubs' first meeting since September 19 at GCU. In that match, the Tigers took down Georgian Court, 3-2, in a five-set thriller. It would be more of the same on this day as the Tigers again scratched out a 3-2 win to improve to 12-1 in CACC play (18-5 overall).
HFU clawed to a 25-22 victory in set one before the Lions were victorious in sets two and three (25-20, 26-24). Looking to end the match in the fourth, the Tigers squashed Georgian Court's attempt with a win of 25-17 before closing the door, 15-6, in the fifth-and-final frame.
The setback snapped GCU's seven-game winning streak and marks the team's first defeat since that fateful day back on September 19 in the Wellness Center.
Georgian Court's trio of
Emily McCurley (19 digs, 10 assists),
Ashley Pierson (16 assists, 10 digs) and
Jaime Sweeney (15 assists,14 digs) provided double-double performances in the effort.
Peggy Rosario (15) and
Aubrey Binkley (12) each achieved double-digit status in the kills column.
Patrolling the net,
Amy Bruno and
Grace Fenn put down five and three blocks, respectively.
As for the nightcap, the Molloy Lions (13-5) secured the first stanza, 26-24, before GCU answered boldly with a 25-14 win in set two. Molloy pushed Georgian Court to the brink with a 25-17 win in the third frame before Lions countered, 25-20, in the fourth. It would be Molloy that would triumph in this cat fight as the other Lions captured a 15-6 win in the fifth.
It was Rosario's opportunity to turn in a double-double performance, which consisted of 17 digs and 10 kills. Fenn matched her personal season-high with a team-leading 13 kills in the effort. Pierson and
Trilby Kite dished 23 and 13 helpers, respectively, while McCurley topped all players with 18 digs.
Shana Rayside contributed nine kills and four blocks in the contest.
Georgian Court (15-7, 11-2 CACC) returns to the road Wednesday evening with a 7:00 p.m. divisional match at Wilmington University. The Lions put away the Wildcats, 3-1, at home on September 14.
