Wilmington, Del.- Georgian Court University, in its first outing as a nationally-ranked team, passed its initial test as the #17 Lions outlasted defending CACC champion, Goldey-Beacom College, on the road Wednesday in men's soccer action.
The victory keeps GCU perfect in conference play at 7-0 and extends the program's team-record winning streak to 10 in a row (10-1 on the year). The Lightning fall to 3-8-1 (2-4-1 CACC).
The home team got on the board first when
Nicholas Ladeira took off on a fast break and buried a GBC tally at 15:02. Georgian Court responded at 29:43, thanks to a
Jonathan Firmino header off a
Vinicius Monteiro free kick. The goal marks the second in as many games for Firmino.
The score would remain tied until the second stanza when
Quentin Bouly ripped a 25-yard pea into the upper right to put the road team up, 2-1, with 33:09 remaining in regulation. Goldey-Beacom would answer in the 79th minute (78:16) as
Joe Scarpinato slipped in the equalizer to knot the score at 2-2.
Just 1:11 later, GCU's
Louis Silva laid into a Bouly feed that got just under the crossbar, providing the Lions the 3-2 advantage ... and the triumph. The victors controlled the shot column, 25-11, including a 12-4 margin regarding shots on goal.
Jamie Hickey continues his sensational sophomore season in the GCU net as he improves to 8-0 with the complete-game win (two saves).
Georgian Court returns to the road Saturday night with a 7:30 p.m. conference contest at Felician University.
