Albany, N.Y. - Georgian Court University men's hoops battled to the end Saturday afternoon as the Lions eventually ran out of steam vs. the College of Saint Rose, 90-74, on the final day of the Golden Knights' Tip-Off Tournament.
An early 11-2 first-half spurt by Saint Rose (1-0) put the home team ahead, 17-7, with 13:57 remaining before intermission. A
Shane Herrity (Sr.-Glendale, N.Y.) three-ball put the Golden Knights ahead again by 10 (33-23) at the 6:07 mark before pulling into the break with a 42-34 surplus.
The Lions (0-1) came out energized in the second stanza by peppering Saint Rose with a 12-3 run of its own to take their first lead of the day (46-45) 4:20 into the period. A
Caleb Bowser jumper from the paint at 13:30 increased GCU's cushion to a game-high four points (52-48).Â
Adam Anderson (So.-Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) landed a three-pointer with 9:30 left, closing out a 13-7 surge for the Golden Knights and providing Saint Rose a lead (61-59) they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Anderson topped all scorers with 29 points in the contest, shooting 11-for-16 (5-for-7 3PT) from the floor.
Matt Cerutti (Sr.-Guilderland, N.Y.) deposited a double-double in his team's first outing of the year with his 14 points and game-best 12 boards.
Sekou Sylla (Fr.-Brooklyn, N.Y) and Herrity drained 16 and 14 points, respectively, in the effort.
Bowser, seeing his first action for the Lions in 2018-19, made up for lost time with team-highs of 28 total points (10-for-21) and six assists in 39 minutes.
Bryce Council put up 16 points in his 38 minutes while
Matt Ringel cleared the glass of eight rebounds for GCU.
Georgian Court remains on the road with a trip to Millersville University Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
