Lakewood, N.J. - A 20-8 run by Wilmington University over the final 6:19 of regulation turned an otherwise close contest into an afterthought as the Wildcats waltzed out of the Wellness Center Wednesday evening with an 86-74 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's basketball divisional victory vs. Georgian Court.
The host-Lions purred late in the first half, erasing an eight-point deficit (16-8, 13:38) and turning it into a six-point lead (27-21) after
Caleb Bowser capped a 13-5 spurt with a layup at the 7:05 mark.
Kendall Bellamy put the home team up by eight (37-29) with a jumper (1:55) as GCU strutted into intermission up 39-34.
A back-and-forth second half ensued as nine lead changes and five ties took place in the high-energy stanza. The Lions would lead as late as the 6:40 mark of the frame (66-64) before the Wilmington offense turned on the afterburners, shooting 53.5% (15-of-28) in the half.
WU's J
ermaine Head (So.-Edgewood, Md.) topped all players with his nine boards, seven assists, and 28 points, including six three-pointers and a perfect six-for-six from the charity stripe.
Miles Gillette (So.-Washington, D.C.) dropped in a smooth 22 points, including four three-balls.
Nick Richards (Sr.-New Castle, Del.) added 17 points and four steals.
Bowser paced the Lions with 23 points in 40 minutes of action.
Nikola Vujovic collected 17 points for his 15th straight game with 10+ points. The junior now needs 16 more to become the third player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau (
Keith Hughes,
Juwuan Carter). Speaking of Carter, the senior scorer netted 15 in the GCU setback.
The Lions (5-21, 5-13 CACC) conclude the 2018 slate Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. home game vs. Felician University. GCU will honor Carter and Vujovic (who is graduating one year early) during a special pregame Senior Day celebration.
