Post Eagles Snare Victory From Georgian Court's Grasp as Lions Fall in OT, 84-83

Lakewood, N.J. - It was deja vu all over again for Georgian Court University Saturday afternoon as the Lions suffered its second straight heartbreaker in overtime, this time falling to visiting Post University, 84-83, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's hoops action.

GCU dropped an 84-82 overtime decision at first-place Jefferson on Tuesday, making this week one of hindsight and lament for the 5-17 (5-9 CACC) Lions.

The visitors mounted their largest lead of the game early in the first half when a Tyler Desrosiers (Sr.-Agawam, Mass.) three-pointer put Post ahead by a 10-2 score just 3:59 into the contest. GCU responded on a 9-0 tear to take a one-point lead (11-10) after a Nikola Vujovic layup at 13:58.

The two clubs would continue to streak in the first session with Post going ahead by six (23-17) at the 8:22 mark and the Lions again countering to take a five-point lead of its own (31-26) after a 14-3 spurt concluded with 4:34 remaining before intermission.

After a Derrick Boyd (Fr.-Springfield, Mass.) three-ball cut the Post deficit to 31-29 with 3:46 left, the lead would not exceed two points either way with the Lions escaping into the locker rooms up 36-35 after a Juwuan Carter three-pointer at the horn closed the half.

The Lions carried that momentum into the second stanza as GCU exploded for a 9-2 run to start the half as Sean Barksdale's three-pointer provided Georgian Court its largest lead of the game at 45-37. GCU would lead by as many as seven as late as the 10:44 mark (55-48) before the Eagles rode a 12-4 jet stream to a 60-59 advantage with 5:35 left.

The differential between the two foes never climbed above three the rest of the way. A pair of Tony Ellington, Jr. free throws put the Lions ahead, 72-69, with just 13 seconds left. However, a Boyd lay-in, followed by a subsequent free throw, with six ticks remaining, left the Lions at a loss heading into the extra session.

In overtime, the Eagles (7-15, 6-7 CACC) jumped out to a four-point advantage (78-74) 1:42 in before GCU retracted the lead (79-78) at the 2:03 mark. The Lions would hang on to the top spot, carrying an 83-82 lead down to just 12 seconds left. It would be Boyd that proved to be a bane to Georgian Court once again as the freshman drained a jump shot with two ticks remaining to stun the GCU faithful and send Post home with the shocking victory.

Desrosiers paced Post with his game-high 30 points, shooting 11-of-19 from the floor and 5-of-10 from the three-point line. Boyd, with his game-winning efforts, collected 21 points, including a 9-for-9 effort from the charity stripe. Tamas Okros (Jr.-Bristol, England) authored a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards while Joseph Lockwood (Sr.-London, England) also netted 11 points in the win.

Carter topped the Lions with his 24 points and five steals, including two jams that electrified the crowd, Vujovic registered his third straight double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Omar Williams followed with 15 points on the day while Caleb Bowser connected on 13 points of his own.

Georgian Court returns to action Wednesday evening with a CACC road game at Chestnut Hill College (8:00 p.m.). The Lions defeated the Griffins in overtime, 98-95, back on December 30 for GCU's first win of the year.
