Garden City, N.Y.- The Georgian Court University men's soccer team took the pitch for the first time in 2018 Thursday afternoon vs. American International College on day one of the Adelphi University Alumni Invitational.
It was not the start Head Coach
Dino Raso and his squad were hoping for as GCU suffered a 3-1 opening day loss to the Yellow Jackets.
AIC opened the scoring in the 35th minute (34:40) when forward
Steven Hernandez (Jr.-Port Chester, N.Y.) knocked in a deflection off a Georgian Court defender. The Yellow Jackets zapped the Lions again at 40:15 as
Jonathan Murray (Sr.-Wallingford, Conn.) connected on a
Jeremy Fricker (Gr.-Strasbourg, France) corner kick.
With the AIC surplus sitting at 2-0 going into intermission, the Yellow Jackets added an insurance tally at 55:33 with
Alexandre Frank (Gr.-Grenoble, France) guiding in a
Jake Durham (Jr.-Bolton, England) free kick.Â
Georgian Court would register its lone goal just 1:03 later as
Tommaso Rio ripped a blast to the bottom left for the freshman's first collegiate points. Despite the final score, the Lions out shot AIC by a 16-10 margin (6-5 on net).
Ioannis Iatroudis (So.-Athens, Greece) earned the win in the AIC, stopping five GCU shots in the complete-game victory.
Yianni Kavarakas grabbed a pair of saves over his 90:00.
The Lions (0-1) sit idle on Friday before returning to action Saturday with a 6:00 p.m. showdown vs. the host-Panthers.
