Lakewood, N.J. -If Wednesday served as a preview of what play in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division will look like in 2018, then fans of Georgian Court University volleyball has a ton to look forward to as the their Lions battled visiting Holy Family University in a five-set classic.
The Tigers held off GCU in five tightly-contested frames in a match lasting 2:09. The squads split the first two sets before the Lions pushed HFU to the brink with a clutch 25-21 victory in frame three. Holy Family answered in the fourth with a 25-21 win before closing out the match with a 15-13 win in the deciding fifth stanza.
Holy Family improves to 10-5 on the year with a 4-1 mark in CACCÂ play. GCU slips to 8-5 overall as the Lions suffered their first conference defeat (4-1 CACC).
Chase Wassel (Sr.-North Wales, Pa.) led the way for the Tigers with her double-double contribution of 26 kills and 15 digs.
Gianna Pesognelli (Jr.-Phoenix, Ariz.) added 21 kills of her own while
Caitlin Griffin (Fr.-St. Paul, Minn.) dropped in 12.
Morgan Silks (Fr.-Norristown, Pa.) also achieved double-double status with 14 digs and an impressive 54 assists.
For the Lions, three players authored double-doubles, including:
Aubrey Binkley (10 kills, 15 digs),
Ashley Pierson (16 assists, 14 digs), and
Jaime Sweeney (25 assists, 10 digs).
Peggy Rosario topped the team with her 15 kills, followed by
Shana Rayside with 12.
Emily McCurley led all players with her 20 digs.
Amy Bruno soared with seven blocks on the night while Rayside collected five put-backs.
Georgian Court takes to the road Saturday with a 2pm CACCÂ contest at Post University.
