Lakewood, N.J.- In a match for the ages, Georgian Court University collected its signature win of 2018 thus far as the Lions upended first-place Jefferson, 3-2, in front of a raucous crowd Tuesday evening in the GCU Wellness Center.
The Lions clawed their way to victories of 25-21 and 25-23 over the first two sets before the Rams settled in and knocked over the home team in the third (25-23) and fourth frame (25-17). In the fifth-and-deciding stanza, it would be GCU taking a trip to the win column, thanks to a clutch 15-12 triumph in the finale.
With the win, Georgian Court moves to 10-5 on the year (6-1 CACC) while the Rams suffer their first conference setback of the season (11-7, 6-1 CACC).
Peggy Rosario contributed her second double-double of the year with her 11 digs and team-best 15 kills. The senior smasher also led all players with three service aces.
Aubrey Binkley countered with 12 kills of her own.
Jaime Sweeney and
Ashley Pierson shared the setting duties, distributing 21 and 20 assists, respectively.
Emily McCurley controlled a team-high 21 digs.
Above the net,
Shana Rayside put down six blocks.
Amy Bruno connected on five denials while
Grace Fenn rejected four Jefferson attempts.
Three Rams reached double-digits in the kills column, including:
Courtney Wensel (17),
Amber Johnson (14) and
Cassandra Hickman (13).
Alexandra Harrington distributed 55 assists while
Alexis Leddy controlled 22 digs in the loss.
GCU now takes to the road for a Friday night match at the University of the Sciences. Start time is set for 6:00 p.m.
