Lakewood, N.J. - For the first time in program history (since 2013), Georgian Court University earned an outright victory vs. Post University as the Lions knocked off the #24-ranked Eagles Saturday, 2-1, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's soccer thriller.
Coming into the contest 0-7-1 all-time vs. their rival from the north, the Lions finally filled the win column as the triumph marked GCU's second of the month vs. a nationally-ranked foe (#8 Mercy College, 1-0, 10/2/19). The Eagles drop to 7-2-3 (4-1-2 CACC) after the setback.
The contest remained scoreless until the 83rd-minute (82:35) when
Javel Dawkins (who did not enter the game until 69:34) made up for lost time as the senior soared to head home a corner kick off the boot of
Giovanni Ciocca-Vasino and put the home team up, 1-0.
Post needed only 2:09 to retaliate as
Sergio Diaz (Jr.-Madrid, Spain) ripped a direct kick into the upper left to knot the score at 1-1 with only 5:16 remaining in regulation. In a contest destined for overtime, The Eagles ended up on the wrong end of a devastating red card at 87:42. With a penalty kick now teed up for GCU, Dawkins calmly drained his third successful PK of the year (fourth overall goal) to net the game-winner and send the squad into a frenzy.
The Lions dominated the shot column, 15-5 , and owned a slight 5-3 edge on frame.
Jamie Hickey secured the goalkeeping win for Georgian Court with two saves over 90:00.
David Mollenthial (So.-Danbury, Conn.) took the loss for the Eagles, collecting three saves in the effort.
Georgian Court (5-7, 4-3) will next take on Molloy College Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference home match.
