Lakewood, N.J. - A
Daniel Vicente header, off a free-kick service from
Giovanni Ciocca-Vasino, with just 3:10 remaining in regulation snapped a scoreless stalemate as Georgian Court University stunned #8 Mercy College, 1-0, in NCAA Division II men's soccer action.
The win marks the Lions' first win over a nationally-ranked foe since topping #16 West Chester University by the same score last season (9/3/18) and marks GCU's first triumph over a ranked opponent in five attempts in 2019.
Yianni Kavarakas was perfect in the Lions' net collecting three saves en route to the complete-game victory, which marks the senior keeper's first win of the year. Despite the result, the Mavericks (7-1-1) out-shot Georgian Court, 15-10 (3-2 on frame).
The victory provides the 75th "W" for head coach
Dino Raso in his collegiate coaching career (54 with Georgian Court).
The Lions (3-5) now return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action this Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. road match at Caldwell University.
