Caldwell, N.J.- After clawing its way back from a two-goal deficit late in the second half, Georgian Court University proved unable to overtake its host as a pair of Caldwell University tallies in the final 6:37 provided the Cougars its first taste of victory Saturday in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's soccer action.
Caldwell, entering the day winless over its previous seven outings, improves to 1-7 (1-3 CACC) after the win. GCU, coming off Tuesday's 1-0 upset home win vs. #8 Mercy College, was unable to carry that momentum into the weekend as the Lions dip to 3-6 (2-2 CACC).
Goals by
Didrik Aase (Fr.-Bergen, Norway) and
Thomas Santana (Jr.-Carmo do Rio Claro, Brazil) at 26:16 and 55:51, respectively, provided the Cougars a seemingly comfortable 2-0 lead in the second half.
The Lions would finally crack the scoring column at 78:53 when
Francisco Corral booted home a
Cort Montanino feed to cut the deficit in half. Just 3:24 later (82:17), an unfortunate Caldwell infraction set the stage for a
Javel Dawkins penalty kick opportunity, which the senior promptly popped in to tie the game at 2-all.
Looking to at least push the game into extra time, the wheels came completely off the Georgian Court bus as the Cougars shocked its guest with a pair of tallies over the next 2:51 (including a PK goal of their own) to escape with the two-goal win.
Nils Svere (Jr.-Lier, Norway) earned the win in net for the victors with four saves over 90:00.
Yianni Kavarakas was the goalie-of-record for Georgian Court, collecting three saves of is own in the complete game effort.
The Lions outshot Caldwell, 17-10, but were topped when it came to shots on frame, 7-6.
Georgian Court looks to rebound on Tuesday afternoon when the Lions host Goldey-Beacom College at 3:30 p.m.
