Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lions' Fairy Tale Postseason Continues as Georgian Court Men Upset #1 Wilmington, 4-2

Waterbury, Conn. -Georgian Court University advances to its second-ever Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer title game (and first since winning it all in 2016) as the Lions stunned #1 Wilmington University, 4-2, in Friday's semifinal round.

A rematch of the 2016 match has been confirmed as GCU will take on #2 Post University in Sunday's championship (10:00 a.m.). The host-Eagles dismissed #3 Holy Family University, 2-1, in the day's other contest. The Lions dropped Post three years earlier with a 4-3 shootout victory to earn their lone conference crown.

Georgian Court (9-10-1), looking to erase the memory of its 8-1 walloping at the hands of the Wildcats back on September 24, jumped out to an immediate 1-0 lead as All-Conference defender, Daniel Vicente, headed in a Giovanni Ciocca-Vasino free kick just 5:38 into the match.

Things went from bad to much worse for the top-seed when a costly red card drawn by Callum McHale (Sr.-Brighton, England) guaranteed a GCU man advantage for the remainder of the game.

Hanging on to its one-goal surplus through intermission, the underdogs doubled its lead to 2-0 after a Joel Quist header (assisted by Ciocca-Vasino) tickled the twine at 52:32. With plenty of time still remaining in regulation, Fredrik Bentdal (Sr.-Lillehammer, Norway) sliced the deficit with his fourth of the year at 62:06.

The Lions, playing with renewed confidence ever since their come-from-behind win at Goldey-Beacom College Monday, immediately squashed any hope of a Wilmington comeback as Nicholas Moran (assisted by Quist) and Francisco Corral (assisted by Tommaso Rio) netted tallies over the next 6:29 to essentially clinch the upset.

Wilmington, despite the outcome, out-shot GCU by a margin of 19-16. The victors, however, provided more attempts on frame at 11-9. Jamie Hickey earned the decision in the Georgian Court cage, collecting seven saves in the complete-game effort.
