Ettrick, Va. - The 2019 edition of the Georgian Court University women's volleyball squad made its official debut Friday as the Lions registered a 3-1 comeback victory over host-Virginia State University in the opening match of the VSU Invitational.
The Trojans, thanks to a mighty 15-1 run, escaped the opening set with a 25-15 triumph. Georgian Court, tied with defending-champion Holy Family University atop the CACCÂ South Division in the CACC preseason coaches poll, showed its mettle as the Lions proceeded to sweep the next three stanzas (25-20, 25-22, 25-18) to earn the hard-fought "W".
Aubrey Binkley shined for the victors with 11 kills in the effort.
Amy Bruno kicked off her senior campaign with eight kills of her own.
Emily McCurley secured a match-best 23 digs, complemented by seven assists.
Kinsy Haschke, in her GCU debut, dropped in four service aces and seven kills.
In the nightcap, the Lions dropped a 3-0 decision to Shepherd University (19-25, 17-25, 22-25).
Georgian Court (1-1) returns to the floor Saturday with a pair of matches vs. Alderson Broaddus University (9:00 a.m.) and Davis & Elkins College (1:00 p.m.) on the final day of the VSU Invite.
