Ettrick, Va. - A day after splitting its first two matches of the season, Georgian Court returned to action Saturday in the Virginia State University Invitational as the Lions swept both matches to close the event with a 3-1 mark.
In morning competition, the Lions upended Alderson Broaddus University, 3-1 (29-27, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21) before needing five sets to defeat Davis & Elkins College (20-25, 25-20, 28-30, 25-17, 25-11) in the nightcap.
Kinsy Haschke led the way for GCU in its match vs. ABU as the sophomore transfer registered the Lions' first double-double performance of the young year with 12 digs and 11 kills.
Amy Bruno drilled 10 kills of her own in the win while
Ashley Pierson and
Trilby Kite dished 11 and 10 assists, respectively.
In Georgian Court's marathon victory vs. Davis & Elkins, it was
Aubrey Binkley's turn to author a double-double performance as the junior gathered 14 digs and floored 12 kills. Pierson joined her teammate in the double-double club with her 21 helpers and 11 digs.
Paula Cespedes and
Emily McCurley controlled 11 digs apiece while Haschke provided a balanced attack consisting of 10 digs, eight kills and four service aces.
Georgian Court (3-1) will now compete next Friday and Saturday in the 2019 Wilmington University Wildcat Regional Invitational in Newark, Del.
