Five Lions Achieve Double-Digit Scoring Figures in 69-64 Divisional Home Loss to Goldey-Beacom

Lakewood, N.J. -  On what marked the first day of the 2020 spring semester, Georgian Court University took the hardwood in front of a packed Wellness Center as five Lions netted 10 or more points in Tuesday's 69-64 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) divisional home loss to rival Goldey-Beacom College.

The visiting Lightning owned a share of the lead the first 12:21 of the initial half before a Jelani Jackson fastbreak layup capped a 12-3 GCU (and erased a nine-point Goldey-Beacom surplus) to put the Lions up by one (22-21) at the 7:38 mark.

A Kyle Elliot (Jr.-Rahway, N.J.) three-ball at 6:36 leapfrogged the Lightning over the home team for the lead, 24-22. The stanza would witness two stalemates the rest of the frame, but it would be GBC that would enter intermission with a slim 32-30 cushion.

Increasing its margin to nine on a pair of occasions in the second half, the Lightning kept Georgian Court at a distance of 43-34 5:47 in. Georgian Court fired up yet another mighty surge as the Lions rattled off a 20-6 roundhouse to mount a five-point lead (54-49) with 6:50 remaining in regulation.

The home team would top the scoring ledger until 2:56 when a Nazim Derry (Fr.-Atlantic City, N.J.) slipped in a layup to put the road team back ahead by one (60-59). The Lions managed to tie the affair one last time (62-62, 1:42), but the Lightning (8-10, 5-4 CACC) would hold off its host the rest of the way, 7-2, to secure the hard-fought victory.

Derry finished the evening with 16 points for the victors to go along with a team-best five steals. Teammate Marcellus Livingston (Linden, N.J.) topped all players with his double-double performance of 27 points and 12 boards, including five three-pointers and a perfect six-for-six from the charity stripe. The junior also compiled a trio of steals, blocks, and assists in the effort.

Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor led the way for the Lions with his 16 points and three blocks. The junior also snagged eight rebounds on the night for GCU. Justin Figueroa collected 12 points for Georgian Court while Kim Speller (nine rebounds), Davon Floyd, and Matt Ringel each dropped in 10 apiece.

Georgian Court (6-9, 4-4 CACC) will now return to Holy Family University (5-12, 2-6 CACC) Thursday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. to complete last Wednesday's suspended game. The Tigers currently lead at the half, 32-28.
