Georgian Court Pushes First-Place Dominican to Brink in Eventual 75-71 Setback ... Council Explodes for 24 Points for Lions

Orangeburg, N.Y. - Georgian Court University continues to leave it all on the floor every, single outing as the Lions battled first-place Dominican College to the bitter end Sunday afternoon, eventually falling on the road to the Chargers, 75-71, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's basketball action.

The Chargers owned the lead a majority of the first half, creating a cushion as high as six points when a Wahaad Johnson (So.-Brooklyn, N.Y.) three-pointer put the home team up, 31-25, with 3:35 to go in the frame. The Lions rallied for an immediate 6-0 run to tie the contest at 31-all with 1:29 left before Dominican netted the next four points to take a 35-31 advantage into intermission.

The second stanza had both squads register 40 points apiece, but DC never relinquished its surplus in the session. A Jonathan Garcia (Sr.-Springfield, Ma.) free throw increased the Lions' deficit to a game-high 10 points (64-54) with 5:44 remaining. GCU would climb to within a trio on three occasions from this point forward, but that would be as close as the road team would get.

Daraja Rodwell (Sr.-Baldwin, N.Y.) collected 21 points in the win for the Chargers while Garcia followed with 15 of his own. Jason Copman (Sr.-Cumberland, Md.) registered a double-double consisting of 10 points and 14 boards while Tavon Ginyard (Sr.-Brentwood, N.Y.) contributed 13 points of his own.

Bryce Council topped all players with his season-best 24 points, which included three three-pointers. The junior point guard also dished a pair of helpers, making the Harlem, N.Y. native the Lions' all-time assists leader (225), breaking a tie with former teammate, Juwuan Carter (2014-18).

Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for Georgian Court while Justin Figueroa added 11 points in 33 minutes off the bench.

GCU (7-10, 5-5 CACC) will next travel to Chestnut Hill College (3-16, 3-7 CACC) Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. for a CACC divisional showdown. The Lions defeated the Griffins, 77-59, in the last meeting between the two teams back on December 3 in the Wellness Center.
