Lakewood, N.J. - A late push in the final 4:49 of regulation by visiting University of the Sciences completed a clutch comeback victory for the Devils as the road team secured a hard-fought 78-74 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference divisional win over host-Georgian Court University Wednesday night in GCU Wellness Center.
Trailing 30-21 with 5:54 remaining in the first half, USciences mounted a 9-0 run to knot the score at 30-30 with 2:33 left before the break. A
Connor Murphy (Fr.-Chester, N.J.) free throw at 0:43 pushed the Devils ahead by one (37-36) before a pair of
Caleb Bowser free throws with three ticks on the clock provided the Lions a 38-37 margin heading into intermission.
In a second stanza that would witness five ties and five lead changes, USciences concocted the perfect elixir to jump start its offense as the Devils, with the score tied at 61-61 (4:49), rattled off a furious 13-4 spurt to take an insurmountable 74-65 advantage with just 50 seconds remaining.
Jordan White (RSo-Tampa, Fla.) posted a game-best 28 points (including three three-pointers) in the win for the road team.
Sean Simon (So.-Philadelphia, Pa.) collected 22 points (four three-pointer) in 30 minutes off the bench while Murphy contributed a double-double consisting of 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Kim Speller, with his 12 points an 11 rebounds, earned his team-leading third double-double performance of the season for the Lions. Bowser continues to rack up the points for GCU as the senior shooter netted 25 on the night.
Justin Figueroa dropped in 12 points off the bench while
Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor snared 11 boards for the royal and gold.
GCU (8-13, 6-8 CACC) looks ahead to Saturday afternoon when the Lions host Post University (16-8, 10-5 CACC) at 3:00 p.m. in the Wellness Center.
