Lakewood, N.J.- A 50-point first half provided Georgian Court the cushion it would need to hold visiting Caldwell University at bay as the Lions coasted to an 85-66 home victory over the Cougars Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's basketball action.
The triumph marks the second-straight over the in-state rival for GCU with the Lions taking the last showdown, 85-79, back on Jan. 11, 2020 in the Wellness Center. Caldwell holds a slight 5-3 advantage in the series history between the two universities.
After the Cougars (4-3, 4-3 CACC) developed an early 14-10 advantage 5:43 into the contest, Georgian Court unloaded for a 40-11 onslaught as the home team created a game-high 25-point surplus with 3:24 left in the first half. While Caldwell went on to match its host in the second-stanza scoring column (35-35), the Cougars would never be able to dip its deficit to below double-digits.
The Lions shot just under 50% (49.2%) from the floor, hitting on 29 of 59 field-goal efforts. Caldwell shot just 38.6% (22-for-57) from the field. GCU also enjoyed success from the charity stripe, connecting on 17-of-21 attempts. The Cougars did not experience the same results, succeeding on only 15-of-27 (55.6%) from the line.
After carrying the Georgian Court offense the day before with a season-best 16 points vs. Felician,
Davon Floyd topped that mark with 17 on Saturday, to go along with 12 rebounds, five assists, five steals, and a pair of blocks. The trio of
Titus Beard,
Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor (3 blocks), and
Clint Wright, Jr. each netted 13 points apiece for the victors.
Caldwell's
Anthony Cooper (Jr.-Ashburn, Va.) topped all scorers with 20 points in the setback.
Daniel Dade, Jr. (Fr.-Springfield, Mass.) followed with 14 points of his own.
Gerald Blount (Gr.-Jersey City, N.J.) added 10 points for the Cougars.
The Lions (2-3, 2-3 CACC), after proving they still perdure in the CACC playoff push, gear up to play a third game in three days with a Sunday afternoon (1:00 p.m.) visit to Bloomfield College. Follow the action LIVE at
