Nyack Nips Georgian Court, 2-1, to Sour Lions' 2021 Spring Home Opener

Lakewood, N.J. - A Djovanny Therasse (Jr.-Spring Valley, N.Y.) goal in the 88th minute (87:46) snapped a 1-1 stalemate, and secured an improbable 2-1 triumph, as short-handed Nyack College upset preseason CACC favorite Georgian Court University Wednesday in men's soccer action.

Winning its second-straight conference road game to start the year, the 2-0 (2-0 CACC) Warriors claim their first-ever win at GCU since the Lions debut in 2013, and snap a four-game slide vs. the royal-and-gold. Georgian Court evens its ledger at 1-1 (1-1 CACC) with the setback.

Playing undermanned for a majority of the contest due to Jacopo Borgalli (So.-Levanto, Italy) receiving his second yellow card off the afternoon at 30:53, the resilient Warriors managed to still draw first blood as a Mitchell Reed (Sr.-Toms River, N.J.)  direct kick from just outside the 18' pierced the Lions' frame to put the visitors ahead, 1-0.

Georgian Court responded exactly 4:40 later (82:00) as Niklas Laenger took advantage of an initially-blocked shot off the boot of teammate Tommaso Rio and ripped a lefty  laser into the Nyack net to tie affair at 1-1. The tally marked the second-career goal for the junior midfielder (9/22/18 vs. Dominican). Rio earned an assist on the play after collecting his own rebound and then feeding Laenger for the score.

The score would hold until the aforementioned fateful moment as Alejandro Ceresuela (Jr.-Vigo, Spain), deep in Lions' territory, stole the ball from a Georgian Court defender before poking it forward to Therasse who promptly popped it through for the game-winner, stunning the home team in the process.

Playing 59:07 of man-up soccer, the Lions dominated the shots column (19-7, 6-4 SOG) and the corner kick total (15-1), but could not take advantage where it mattered most.

Max Meurer (So.-Wiesbaden, Germany) earns his first win of the season as the Nyack keeper registered four saves in the complete-game performance. Jamie Hickey (1-1), the reigning CACC Goalkeeper of the Week, gathered a pair of saves in the defeat.

The Lions look to get back on track Saturday when they pay a visit to Concordia College at 12:00 p.m. Follow LIVE on the CACC Network!
