Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University erased an 0-2 deficit and proceeded to stun visiting West Chester University in an eventual 3-2 thriller as the Lions, with two home victories Saturday, remain undefeated at 7-0 on the season. GCU swept Queens College, 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-18), to start the day.
After dropping the first two sets by identical scores of 25-22, the Lions attacked the Golden Rams with wins of 25-18, 25-14, and an emphatic 15-9 fifth-set triumph to secure the signature non-conference victory.
"We really responded today after being down 0-2 to a really good West Chester team," stated head coach
Dan Sempkowski. "It shows a lot about this group that we have been able to turn it around in matches and not give up, no matter the score ... today was a true team effort."
Kinsy Haschke enjoyed a monster of a match as the senior authored a double-double effort consisting of 18 kills and 20 digs. The Texas native provided nine kills and eight digs in the win over the Knights of Queens.
Nylene Mateo, who paced GCU with 11 kills in the first match of the day, closed the afternoon with a double-double performance of 13 kills and 20 digs.
Trilby Kite dished 20 helpers and settled nine digs vs. the Knights. The senior dazzled in the West Chester win with 28 more assists and 11 digs.
Faith Bennett (20 assists, 10 digs)Â and
Jessica Sprankle (11 assists, 16 digs) also posted double-doubles to give the Lions five such efforts vs. the Golden Rams.
Grace Fenn contributed 13 kills in the 3-2 win while newcomer,
Chelsea Ross, drilled seven kills and floored a mighty eight blocks in the comeback win.
Georgian Court remains idle until Wednesday when the Lions kick off the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) slate with a visit to Chestnut Hill College. Start time is 7:00 p.m.
