Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - Georgian Court University men's soccer remains unbeaten in its first four outings of 2021 as the Lions took to the road and doubled up Mercy College, 2-1, Tuesday afternoon in NCAA Division II non-conference action.
The victory pushes GCU's record to 3-0-1 on the young season while the host-Mavericks drop to 4-2.
Jonathan Firmino contributed mightily to the Lions' triumph as the senior netted the game-winner and added an assist for a three-point night.
Mathias Madersbacher opened the scoring at 14:05 as the sophomore sent in a Firmino feed for his first tally of the year. Firmino followed by heading in a
Louis Silva corner kick at 30:04 (his first goal since Oct. 20, 2018 at Post University) to give the visitors a 2-0 surplus.
The Mavericks ruined the Lions' shutout bid with a tally at 60:13, but GCU would hang on to improve to 2-0 all-time vs. Mercy. Despite the outcome, the home team out-shot the Lions, 17-13 (10-6 on frame).
Gianluca Cersosimo grabbed eight saves in 90:00 to record the complete-game victory in net for the victors.
Georgian Court now returns home to kick off conference play as the Lions host Dominican College this Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
