Wright On! Georgian Court Sophomore Sinks Last-Second Buzzer Beater as Lions Wiggle Past Wilmington, 73-72

Lakewood, N.J. - A Clint Wright, Jr. buzzer-beating three-pointer two ticks before the conclusion of regulation provided Georgian Court University a thrilling 73-72 Central Atlantic Collegiate divisional home win over Wilmington University as the Lions said sayonara to an eight-game losing streak Monday night in the Wellness Center. 

The victory marks GCU's first on its home hardwood in exactly two months (11/24 vs. Mercy College) and first overall since a 50-47 road win at Holy Family University back on Dec. 7. The Wildcats, losers of six-straight outings, slip to 4-14 (1-7 CACC) after the stunning setback.

Georgian Court dominated the first 20 minutes of action as the Lions developed a game-high 16-point cushion (43-27) before heading into the intermission with a 44-30 surplus. After a pair of a free throws from Wright put the royal-and-blue ahead by 14 (50-36) at the 16:47 mark of the second half, Wilmington whipped off an immediate 14-3 run to slice the deficit to 53-50 with 11:07 left.

A Shane Williams jumper concluded a 6-0 spurt for the Lions to put GCU back ahead by nine with under ten minutes (8:40) to go. Trailing 59-50, the Wildcats unleashed an emphatic 22-11 charge over the next 8:31 to put the road team on the brink of the all-important conference road win, yet unknowingly setting the stage for Wright's heroics.

The Suffolk, Va. native 18 points (including a trio of three-pointers) in his 38 minutes. The sophomore sensation admitted in a post-game interview that the buzzer-beating game-winner was the first of his basketball career.

Olisa Ngonadi, playing only his second game of the season, enjoyed a game for the ages as the junior transfer out of Division I Robert Morris University netted a game-high 23 points in 24 minutes, including at least five ferocious dunks in the win. The Fort Washington, Md. product shot an almost-perfect 11-of-12 from the floor while also compiling seven boards and a dominating six rejections.

Williams fell just three assists short of the first triple-double in program history as the junior registered 10 points, 11 boards, and seven helpers.

Danny Walsh (Gr.-Bear, Del.), thanks to 9-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe, recorded a team-best 19 points for WU. Justin Thomas (Jr.-Newark, Del.), hitting 7-of-10 from the floor, finished with 18 points while Randy Rickards (Jr.-Milton, Del.) authored a double-double consisting of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Caleb Matthews (So.-Smyrna, Del.) matched his mate with 11 points of his own.

GCU (3-14, 2-7 CACC) return to conference play Wednesday night with an 8:00 p.m. home game vs. Goldey-Beacom College (9-7, 5-2). The Lions fell to the Lightning, 88-75, in the squads' earlier meeting back on Dec. 01 in Wilmington, Del.
