LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Oct. 1, 2022) - On a dreary afternoon in Lakewood, Georgian Court Women's Soccer shined bright. Perhaps aided by the youthful exuberance of the Howell Under-9 Cheetahs youth soccer club that joined them during introductions, the Lions came out with an energy that lasted all 90 minutes and propelled them to a 2-0 win over Post University. Post had been unbeaten in their first five conference matches. It's the Lions first conference win of the season. They move to 2-4-5 overall and 1-2-3 in the CACC.
How it Happened
• Each side had an equal number of opportunities with 13 shots apiece. In fact each team had five first half shots and eight in the second.
• The Eagles though put more shots on net as GCU was forced to make seven saves. The Lions put it on net four times.
• Post also had the advantage on set pieces, taking five corners, four in the first half to the Lions one.
• Each team was booked for a yellow card in the second half and Post was called for 16 fouls and the Lions 11.
• Early on Post had a number of scoring opportunities. They tested GCU goaltender
Alyssa Dias early with a shot less than four minutes in. Post also was awarded two corner kicks back-to-back before the five minute mark.
• Midway through the half, Post was called for a foul that gave GCU a free kick not far from where a traditional corner kick is taken.
Emily Clayton put it towards the back post and
Aliya Canfield beat goaltender Imelda Lazaro with a header for a 1-0 lead.
• The wind gusts were playing a factor as there were long stretches without much action on net. With less than 10 minutes remaining in the half,
Abby Kennelly had a chance to make it 2-0, but she lifted one high over the crossbar.
• Georgian Court's defense swallowed up the Eagles as the half ended. They had just one shot in the final 14 minutes of play.
• Each team got a pair of shots off in the first 10 minutes of half number two. In the 58th minute,
Sophia Ridolfo intercepted a pass from the Post goalkeeper. She pushed it to
Bridgette King who took a dribble, shot right with her left foot and tucked it into the corner for a 2-0 Lion lead.
• In the 68th minute it was Dias' turn to make a big play. A GCU foul gave Post a free kick in the offensive zone. Katharina Kuhne put it on net which Dias saved, but couldn't hang on to. The rebound went to Amber McGee and Dias again kept the ball out of the net with a diving stop to her right.
• The Lions had numerous opportunities to put the game away late.
Abby Kennelly had a pair of shots sail high and wide and
Izzy Hernandez also pushed her shot wide.
• It made no difference in the end though as GCU kept a clean sheet preserving their fourth shutout of the season.
