Jefferson Halts Lions Unbeaten Streak at Four

PHILADELPHIA (Oct. 11, 2022) - Georgian Court Women's Soccer suffered their first defeat in the month of October Tuesday afternoon. The Lions took on Jefferson, who sit second in the CACC and sixth in the East Region, and surrendered four first-half goals in a 5-0 loss to the Rams. The loss puts the Lions at 3-5-6 this season and 2-3-4 in the CACC with three league matches remaining.

How it Happened
• Jefferson got the right mix of offense and defense and were in control throughout most of the match.
• The Rams put seven shots on goal and allowed just three to the Lions.
• Jefferson also secured six corner kicks to the Lions two.
• Georgian Court committed five fouls and were issued a pair of yellow cards while Jefferson tallied for seven fouls.
• It was a flurry of offense to start the match. Jefferson nearly scored in the first 30 seconds, but Nikki Dedes shot rang off the crossbar and out.
• Then it was Krystal Hund looking for an early goal. Her shot attempt in the third minute was stopped by Jaclyn Martino.
• Not two minutes later though, Jefferson scored their first of four first-half goals. Erika Laurel beat Alyssa Dias for the 1-0 lead.
• Georgian Court still hadn't put another shot on the board after Hund's early attempt and at the 19 minute mark, the Rams made it 2-0 as this time Dedes hit the back of the net.
• With 15 minutes left to play in the half, a GCU foul in the box gave the Rams a penalty kick opportunity. Dedes went to the circle and connected for her second of the match.
• The Rams weren't finished though. In the 37th minute, a short Dias punt saw the Rams come up with the 50-50 ball. Two passes later, Abby Cargile's shot slipped by Dias and it was a 4-0 lead.
• Not that they needed any help, but early in the second half the Rams were gifted a goal when the Lions tried to play to new goalkeeper Carley Polchak. The ball took a bad hop and trickled into the net for the Rams fifth goal of the afternoon.
• With a 5-0 lead in tact, the Rams tightened up defensively and were content running out the clock, which is what they did as the Lions mustered just two shots in the half.

Lion Stat Leaders
Krystal Hund had two of the Lions three shots on goal.
Jordyn Nelson finished with a shot and a yellow card.
Sydney Kulenguski's only shot came on net.
Carley Polchak made two saves in goal, Alyssa Dias stopped one.

• Nikki Dedes had a six point game with two goals and two assists.
• Laural Erick and Abby Cargile also scored a goal.
• Carly Yeager finished with a shot and an assist.
• Jaclyn Martino stopped all three Lion shots on net.

• The Lions entered the match with just three yellow card bookings all season. They picked up two in the first half. It's the first time GCU has been issued multiple yellow cards in the same match.

• The loss ends the Lions season-long four-match unbeaten streak (2-0-2).
• The five goals allowed is the most GCU has allowed in a conference match this season.
• This was the Lions first road game since Sept. 21.
