Volleyball Sweeps Alliance On Homecoming

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Oct. 15, 2022) - Georgian Court Volleyball picked up their second straight win, this time in dominating fashion, a 3-0 sweep of Alliance. The Lions came out on fire, winning set one 25-4. They then completed the sweep with wins of 25-21 and 29-27.

How it Happened
• The Lions held the advantage in every statistical category. They hit .292 for the match with Alliance hitting .159. GCU almost doubled Alliance in points, 63-35, getting 42 kills and 14 service aces.
• GCU also put back seven blocks to Alliance's four and scooped up 44 digs while Alliance tallied 37.
• Georgian Court scored the first six points in set one. Jessica Sprankle started the match with a service ace and had three aces in the first six points. The Lions never took their foot off the gas, going up 21-2 before going on to win 25-4. The Lions hit .550 in the set and didn't commit a single attack error.
• Set two the Lions again never trailed, but Alliance kept up. Tied at seven, the Lions took over with a 6-1 run to get on top 13-8. Amiyah Woods had two kills and Sprankle and Dayna Diaz a service ace each. Georgian Court pushed the lead to eight, 18-10, netting five straight points, but Alliance brought the lead all the way down to one, 21-20, with a 10-3 spurt. Georgian Court scored four of the final five points, with Woods knocking three kills to take a 2-0 match lead. 
• Alliance took their first lead in the match scoring the first two points in set three. The Lions trailed 3-2 when they went on a 7-1 run to regain control and the lead, 9-4. GCU seemed to be in control after scoring five straight for a 16-7 lead, but just like set two, here came Alliance. Trailing 20-10, Alliance used an 11-3 run to get to within two, 23-21. Georgian Court was at match-point, 24-21, when Alliance scored four straight and now held set point, 25-24. Three times Alliance held set point, but the Lions answered each time and finally scored three straight to hold on for a 29-27 win.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Although she played in just two of the three sets, Nylene Mateo landed a match-high 13 kills and hit .632.
• Emma Gildea scored 10.5 points with seven kills and 3.5 blocks. She hit .312 without an attack error.
• Amiyah Woods also chipped in with seven kills, hitting .455 for the match.
• Jessica Sprankle did a bit of everything with three kills, five digs and six service aces.
• Iciar Zayas passed out 21 assists.
• Dayna Diaz totaled 12 helpers and six digs.
• Jana Borkovic corralled 20 digs.

For Alliance
• Natalie Piper had a team-best eight kills and hit .333.
• Rayah Burge finished with seven kills and seven digs.
• Jordan Mack dished out 11 assists and Kristen Bernal 27.
• Jamie Willix helped the defense with 17 digs.

News and Notes
• Iciar Zayas surpassed 600 career assists. She's the 11th all-time at GCU to reach 600.
• The Lions .292 attack percentage is their highest in a match this season.
• The 14 service aces are their most in any three-set match, and second-highest total of the season.
• Jana Borkovic has 20+ digs in back-to-back matches and five of her last nine.
• Nylene Mateo's .632 attack percentage is her highest of the season.

• The Lions play their final nonconference match of the season Tuesday, Oct. 18 when they travel to take on New Haven in Connecticut. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
