Lions Draw with Dolphins, 1-1

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2022) - Two second half goals, one from each team, was all there was Wednesday afternoon in Staten Island. The two goals came less than a minute apart as Georgian Court and Staten Island were scoreless for the other 89 minutes of a 1-1 draw.

How it Happened
• Georgian Court possessed the ball for much of the afternoon. They led in shots 14-3 and shots on goal 5-1.
• On corner kicks, GCU held a 9-0 advantage. They also had 11 free kicks after CSI fouls.
• Georgian Court played a clean game with just four total fouls and no yellow cards. Staten Island picked up nine fouls and two yellows.
• Early in the match, Abby Kennelly had one of the Lions better scoring chances of the afternoon. Following a Dolphin turnover, she put a shot on net in the seventh minute that was saved by Breanna Dore.
• In the 18th minute, Sydney Kulenguski turned around and put a shot on net, that was punched out by a diving Dore. That led to a GCU corner kick where Kennelly had another chance, but Dore was in place again to make the save.
• The Lions had two more good scoring opportunities late in the half. In the 35th minute, a free kick from 20 yard out was sent towards goal. It was knocked around front and GCU was called for offsides nullifying a header attempt.
• With just two minutes to play, the Lions played a cross through the goal mouth. There were two Lions there, but the ball found the one Dolphin defender in between who brushed it aside and GCU didn't get a shot off.
• All the scoring happened in the 57th minute. The Dolphins connected first following a free kick. Jacquelyn D'Amico's header redirected the kick past Alyssa Dias and into the net for a 1-0 lead.
• Just 33 seconds later the Lions tied it. Abby Kennelly was in the near corner. She flicked it back towards the middle where Aliya Canfield one timed it off the far post and into the net.
• The Lions maintained possession for much of the half, but weren't able to get a second goal past Dore. Ashley Merizalde had a chance in the 72nd minute, but her shot from left of the net stayed left and out.
• Staten Island had some of their best pressure late. With under four to play, a shot was blocked by the Lion defense. The Dolphins then pushed another towards net, but didn't get enough on it to challenge Dias.
• In the closing seconds the Lions lined up for a free kick in the offensive zone. It stayed low and was intercepted by the Dolphins who broke out on a 3-2 with 15 seconds to play, but ran themselves offsides and out of the play as the clock hit zeros.
